These are the goals of E-BioSci, a European initiative to pro- vide a variety of high quality electronic services relat- ing to full text access and retrieval in the life sciences. Much still remains to be done to ensure optimal accessibility of the biological litera- ture and its linkage to databases containing sequences, sequence-related information or digital images. However, these changes address only part of the problem. Following calls from the PubMed Central and the Public Library of Science ini- tiatives in the USA, various publishers now oer more or less unrestricted access to their journal archives and they host e-journals with no, or low peer-review barri- ers to publication. It is against this background of changing practices and expectations that researchers in the bio-medical sciences have also come to question established editorial, review- ing and publishing practices and even to reconsider the nature of the publication itself. The typical research scientist therefore wishes to have free, or at least unhindered access to as wide a range of electronic information sources as possi- ble, to be able to navigate eortlessly between them and to search, select, integrate and manipulate information without leaving his or her desk. Paper is turning out to be an inadequate medium for the flood of new data that often demands both further ma- nipulation and new methods of visualization as an aid to interpretation. Just as the emerging field of genomics is changing the way in which molecular biologists plan, execute and interpret their research, so is the transi- tion from traditional to electronic publishing technolo- gies changing the ways in which the results of this re- search is disseminated to and used by other scientists. The development of the GID continues, aiming at facilitating the management and exchange of image data in the scientific community, and at creating new query tools for mining image data. The query results are first shown as image thumbnail previews, enabling quick browsing prior to original-sized annotated image retrieval. The GID annotations are searchable by field or globally. In addition, the entries in the GID reference these imaging protocols with the probe sequences or antibody names used in labeling experiments.

A collection of experimental imaging protocols provides details of the sample preparation, and labeling, or visualization procedures. The annotations in the GID define the source experiment of the images by describing who the authors of the experiment are, when the images were created, the biological origin of the experimental sample and how the sample was processed for visualization. The GID was designed to manage images from a wide spectrum of imaging domains ranging from microscopy to automated screening. The Global Image Database (GID) is a web-based ( m ) structured central repository for scientific annotated images. Here we present a solution to unlock the value of scientific images.
